A trilingual signage system shaped by place, language, and a mission of reconciliation.
How do you create a sense of place for a university with no traditional campus and a mission rooted in reconciliation? At Algoma University, where buildings are scattered across urban blocks, the responsibility to represent Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities equally is central to the institution’s identity. Cygnus addressed both by introducing a signage and placemaking strategy rooted in Algoma’s new brand identity. Bold, branded environmental graphics and placemaking elements help to unify scattered buildings into a recognizable campus experience, while a tri-language sign system, featuring English, French, and either Anishinaabemowin or Mohawk, depending on location, ensure visibility and representation for all campus users. The resulting approach strengthens campus identity, fosters inclusion through visible language representation, and helps cultivate a sense of belonging and pride for students, faculty, and visitors alike.
