Current state
To ground the system in reality, we audited seven parks to assess materials and compliance. Field reviews identified sign clutter, a lack of continuity, and widespread disrepair. Stakeholders noted the existing 173-page manual was a logistical hindrance, being too large to email and impossible to update. Our procurement analysis also uncovered inconsistent vendor practices across six regions. These insights allowed us to simplify complex governance into clear, actionable guidance.

Updated signage standards
The new signage standards manual provides a complete framework for signage execution, including graphic assets, pictogram usage, and panel specifications. Detailed placement guidelines define clear zones for signage and address both vehicular and pedestrian contexts. The manual serves as a long-term reference that supports consistency while allowing for informed customization. It empowers stakeholders with a reliable guide that balances high-level provincial requirements with the practical needs of local park operations.

Standardization has transformed a complex library into a highly intuitive system. This system reduces visual clutter across some of British Columbia’s most scenic environments by focusing layouts on essential information. By organizing content into a color-coded hierarchy, we created a simplified layout that allows different sign types to be stacked elegantly on a single post. These human-centered design principles determine hierarchy, scale, and placement to ensure legibility without competing with the surrounding landscape. Flexible mounting supports consistent application on kiosks, posts, and trailheads across varied terrain.

SignStandards+
Our proprietary platform, SignStandards+, serves as the signage system's operational engine. It provides over 100 active users with instant access to brand assets, pictograms, and sign templates. Staff and approved vendors can customize messaging directly in their browser to generate fabrication-ready files on demand. This digital workflow eliminates version-control issues and supports local procurement by allowing operators to submit for quotes in accordance with provincial thresholds. The platform grants autonomy to regional parks while ensuring compliance and consistency across the entire BC Park system.
