Current state
To understand the challenge that BC Parks faced we surveyed multiple provincial parks across Vancouver Island, the Lower Mainland, and Interior regions. Our surveys identified sign clutter, a lack of continuity, and widespread disrepair.
Meetings with parks operators and administrative staff noted the existing signage manual was a major hindrance. At 173 pages, it was hard to read, too large to email, and challenging to update. Our review of procurement also uncovered inconsistent vendor practices across six regions.

Flexible design system
Cygnus designed a suite of updated sign types across directional, identification, orientation, interpretive, information, and regulatory. The design system utilizes a simplified layout that allows different sign types to be stacked on a single post without looking cluttered. Flexible mounting supports consistent application on kiosks, posts, and trailheads across varied terrain. A colour-coded system was implemented to distinguish directional information from caution and warning messages. The new signage standard maintains cohesion with existing signage as part of a long-term implementation strategy.

Digital sign catalogue
Cygnus developed an online sign catalogue in response to BC Parks’ need for a dynamic solution to their province-wide challenge. Over 100 parks operators across BC can login securely to bcparks.signagestandards.com to select sign templates, customize messages and pictograms and export production-ready files. The documentation can be taken to local signage fabricators in each region.
Brand assets, pictograms, policies, and sign specifications are provided within the online catalogue, ensuring that updates made by BC Parks administrative staff are available in real-time to parks operators across the province without re-publishing and distributing to seasonal contractors.
This digital workflow eliminates version-control issues and supports local procurement by allowing operators to submit for quotes in accordance with provincial thresholds.

Sign standards manual
An updated signage standards manual is a provided through the online sign catalogue, providing a complete framework for signage execution, including graphic assets, pictogram usage, and panel specifications. Detailed placement guidelines define clear zones for signage and address both vehicular and pedestrian contexts. The manual serves as a long-term reference that supports consistency while allowing for informed customization. It empowers stakeholders with a reliable guide that balances high-level provincial requirements with the practical needs of local park operations.
