Reinforcing a Unique Identity
Okotoks wanted to distinguish itself from a suburb of Calgary and reclaim its civic voice. The new signage program draws from the town’s natural landmarks, including the glacial Okotoks Erratic, the winding Sheep River, and the surrounding wheat fields, to ground the system in place. Cohesive typography and material choices create a consistent visual language that builds civic pride and strengthens local identity.

Supporting Movement and Local Business
The wayfinding strategy was designed to increase foot traffic to key destinations and make it easier to explore by any mode of travel. Clear directional signage and maps support seamless access to cultural, commercial and recreational zones, helping extend visitor stays and stimulate local business. A cohesive network of pedestrian, vehicular and trail signage improves movement and connectivity across the town.

Long-Term Stewardship
Designed with longevity and adaptability in mind, the signage program supports Okotoks’ evolving needs while managing long-term costs. Signage standards and a complete family of signs was developed, including gateway, directional, pedestrian, and civic identification, to be rolled out in phases, aligning with budget cycles and infrastructure planning. Simplified layouts and vinyl-clad posts reduce maintenance requirements, while varied mounting methods ensure flexibility across contexts. The result is a resilient, future-ready system that supports tourism growth, changing transportation patterns, and ongoing community development.
