Site analysis & planning
Understanding how people move through the University District was foundational. Cygnus conducted comprehensive circulation studies that accounted for traffic flow, on-street bike lanes, off-street multi-use pathways, green spaces, bus stops, and access to parking. These insights shaped a wayfinding strategy that felt intuitive from every entry point and functional across modes of travel. In parallel, a full signage bylaw review was completed for the site’s various zoning designations. The result was a visual report that aligned signage recommendations with Calgary’s regulatory requirements, ensuring compliance from the outset and laying the groundwork for smooth phased implementation.

Branding a community
To foster a sense of identity without overwhelming the neighbourhood’s look and feel, simple yellow fin banners were introduced on existing streetlight poles. This subtle visual gesture amplified the district’s brand while minimizing infrastructure additions. Custom street signs and cohesive colour palettes across all signage elements reinforced the sense of a complete, self-contained community.

Placemaking concepts
To cultivate a unique sense of place, we developed integrated placemaking concepts visualized through in situ renderings to accurately demonstrate their scale and impact. This strategy included multiple gateway features designed to reinforce the University District brand at important intersections and entry points. We also proposed sculptural and functional public art integrations to activate the brand identity during key moments throughout the site. Additionally, our team explored variations for typical tenant signage pylons, ensuring that commercial visibility supports the district's overarching aesthetic and brings awareness to retailers in the district.

Parking
Located beneath the commercial hub, the University District parkade is the primary arrival point for the community. Drivers enter here before navigating to their specific destinations, making clear orientation essential. Our strategy is built on a simple objective: help people understand where they are, where they are going, and when they have arrived.
Through colour zoning and intuitive navigation, the wayfinding organizes the space to guide drivers to the area best suited for their visit. Whether for residents, professionals, or shoppers, the system ensures a seamless path into the district and back to their vehicle. These branded visual cues extend the design language from the street into the parkade, creating a consistent experience that builds trust and ease of movement.
